Generic Zoloft, come as scored tablets for oral administration as 25, 50 and 100 mg.
Generic Zoloft - Sertraline is a prescription medicine that belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is an antidepressant. Serotonin is one of the chemical messengers believed to govern moods. Ordinarily, it is quickly reabsorbed after its release at the junctures between nerves. Re-uptake inhibitors such as Generic Zoloft slow this process, thereby boosting the levels of serotonin available in the brain.
Active Ingredients: Sertraline Hydrochloride
Inactive Ingredients: dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, D & C Yellow #10 aluminum lake (in 25 mg tablet), FD & C Blue #1 aluminum lake (in 25 mg tablet), FD & C Red #40 aluminum lake (in 25 mg tablet), FD & C Blue #2 aluminum lake (in 50 mg tablet), hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, sodium starch glycolate, synthetic yellow iron oxide (in 100 mg tablet), and titanium dioxide.
What is Generic Zoloft - Sertraline PRESCRIBED For?
Generic Zoloft - Sertraline is prescribed for the treatment of a number of mood and anxiety disorders including depression, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in adults over age 18, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and panic disorder.
Please pay attention that Generic Zoloft - Sertraline is only approved for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder in children between the ages of 6 to 17. Generic Zoloft is not approved or promoted for the treatment of depression in children or adolescents.
How Should I Take Generic Zoloft - Sertraline?
Take Generic Zoloft - Sertraline tablets orally. Follow the directions on the prescription label. You may take Generic Zoloft with or without food. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice. Do not use this medication in children unless you have been specifically instructed to do so by your health care provider.
The dosage may differ depending on what is prescribed for.
In patients who have Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, usual starting dose is 50 milligrams a day. If this proves insufficient, the doctor will increase the dose in 50-milligram steps at the start of each new menstrual cycle up to a maximum of 100 milligrams per day in the 2-week regimen or 150 milligrams per day in the full-cycle regimen.
In patients who have Panic Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder usual dose is 25 milligrams once a day. After that, the dose increases to 50 milligrams once a day. Depending on your response, you're the doctor may continue to increase your dose up to a maximum of 200 milligrams a day.
In patients who have Depression or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, usual starting dose is 50 milligrams once a day, taken either in the morning or in the evening. The doctor may increase your dose depending upon your response. The maximum dose is 200 milligrams in a day.
In the treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder for children aged 6 to 12, the starting dose is 25 milligrams and for adolescents aged 13 to 17, 50 milligrams. The doctor will adjust the dose as necessary.
NOTE: Safety and effectiveness have not been established for children under 6.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F).
Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Zoloft - Sertraline?
Generic Zoloft - Sertraline is contraindicated to patients with a hypersensitivity to sertraline or any of the inactive ingredients in Generic Zoloft. It is also contraindicated to patients that are taken Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) as well as Pimozide. Generic Zoloft - Sertraline oral concentrate is contraindicated with
ANTABUSE (disulfiram) due to the alcohol content of the concentrate.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
NOTE: Do not take double or extra doses.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
Symptoms of Generic Zoloft overdose include:
- Nausea;
- rapid heartbeat;
- sleepiness;
- dizziness;
- tremor;
- agitation;
- dizziness;
- tremor;
- vomiting.
Other possible symptoms include: delirium, hallucinations, mania, coma, stupor, fainting, convulsions, high or low blood pressure, and slow, rapid, or irregular heartbeat.
An overdose of Generic Zoloft can be fatal. If an overdose is suspected call your local emergency room immediately.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Zoloft - Sertraline?
Many people lose a pound or two of body weight while taking Generic Zoloft - Sertraline. This usually poses no problem but may be a concern if your depression has already caused you to lose a great deal of weight.
Other side effects may also include: abdominal pain, agitation, anxiety, constipation, decreased sex drive, diarrhea or loose stools, headache, decreased appetite, increased sweating, indigestion, insomnia, nausea, difficulty with ejaculation, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, gas, nervousness, tingling or pins and needles, tremor, pain, rash, sleepiness, sore throat, vision problems, vomiting
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Zoloft - Sertraline?
Do not take Generic Zoloft within 2 weeks of taking any drug classified as an MAO inhibitor. Drugs in this category include the antidepressants Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate. Symptoms of a drug interaction between an SSRI and an MAOI include:
- autonomic instability with possible rapid fluctuations of vital signs;
- mental status changes that include confusion, irritability, and extreme agitation progressing to delirium and coma;
- hyperthermia;
- rigidity;
- myoclonus.
Patients that recently have discontinued an SSRI and have been started on an MAOI may experience the same reactions.
Some cases presented with features resembling neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Therefore, Generic Zoloft should not be used in combination with an MAOI, or within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with an MAOI. Similarly, at least 14 days should be allowed after stopping Generic Zoloft before starting an MAOI.
In addition, you should not take Generic Zoloft with the drug pimozide (Orap).
Use over-the-counter remedies with caution.
