Esomeprazole is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which block the production of acid by the stomach. Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which all are caused by stomach acid. Esomeprazole, like other proton-pump inhibitors, works by turning off some of the acid pumps in the stomach lining and reducing the amount of acid backing up into the esophagus (food pipe).
Active ingredient: Esomeprazole magnesium
Other Ingredients: gelatin, FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Red #40, D&C Red #28, titanium dioxide, shellac, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, propylene glycol, sodium hydroxide, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and D&C Yellow #10.

Esomeprazole is approved for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin (Biaxin) for the treatment of patients with ulcers and H. pylori infection. Since it is very similar to omeprazole, it also is likely that it will be used for the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Esomeprazole capsules should be administered one hour before meals, swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, you may add 1 tablespoon of applesauce to an empty bowl. Open the capsule and empty the pellets onto the applesauce. Mix the pellets with the applesauce and swallow the mixture immediately. The applesauce used should not be hot and should be soft enough to be swallowed without chewing. Do not chew or crush the pellets. Do not store the mixture for future use.
STORAGE
Store at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom) and light. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed

It is important to disclose your medical history, including any pre-existing conditions. You should not take this drug if you are allergic to esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole or rabeprazole.

Do not take Generic Nexium - Esomeprazole without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

In case of overdose, call emergency or your local poison control center. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, unusual sweating, blurred vision, or unusually fast heartbeat.

Tell your doctor specifically if you have any of the following symptoms:
• headache
• diarrhea
• upset stomach
• gas
• stomach pain
• constipation
• dry mouth

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of these more serious side effects:
• hives
• skin rash
• itching
• difficulty breathing or swallowing
• swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
• hoarseness

This drug may cause other side effects.

Generic Nexium - Esomeprazole e potentially can increase the concentration in blood of diazepam (Valium) by decreasing the elimination of diazepam in the liver.
The absorption of certain drugs may be affected by stomach acidity. Therefore, Generic Nexium - Esomeprazole and other PPIs that reduce stomach acid also reduce the absorption andconcentration in blood of ketoconazole (Nizoral) and increase the absorption andconcentration in blood of digoxin (Lanoxin). This may lead to reduced effectiveness of ketoconazole or increased digoxin toxicity, respectively.

Some patients who took a drug similar to Generic Nexium - Esomeprazole for a long time developed a condition in which the stomach muscles weaken and shrink. However, it is not known if taking Generic Nexium - Esomeprazole increases your risk of developing this condition.

Do not share Generic Nexium - Esomeprazole with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE Generic Generic Nexium - Esomeprazole for other health conditions.
